Freyberg Festival 2011 memorable for Bands, Boxing and an MP

Around 600 Freyberg students filled the Lido Aquatic Centre partying the night away in the second annual Freyberg Festival.  The event was funded completely by students reducing litter and graffiti around the school.  They saved $6500 and paid for the Lido, as well as bands, free food, drink, and even some giant inflatable activities.

Member of Parliament - Iain Lees-Galloway in his first public outing since the election, officially opened the festival. He was quick to thank those present for their support, and congratulate them on their working hard to fund the festival before volleying another generous handful of lollies into the crowd.

An impressive line-up of Bands came, with finalists from TV competitions New Zealand's Got Talent, and Erin Simpson's Battle of Bands. Some of the Regional Rockquest finalists as well as the 2011 regional Rockquest winner - Kelsey Lawn also entertained. Treasure hunts, hand stands, paper darts, and diving competitions kept the crowds entertained between bands. And a tough final round in an inter-house tug-of-war saw Tararua House eventually overpower their opponents from Kapiti.

Bouncy Boxing was a popular activity on the night. A crowd quickly gathered when Health teachers Dianne Stewart, and Whaea Sharon Nikora donned the giant gloves for a friendly bout.

Festival Organiser Jim Seumanu was delighted with the festival and how the student culture of looking after the school had changed. The Festival Facebook page was engulfed with students describing the night in their own words. The students wrote 'Epic Night', 'Amazing', 'Awesome' 'Best Nite Ever', 'Mean as Nyt', 'Freakin Great', and 'Mint as'. One student passionately said it was 'owwff the Heeezy' while another more elegantly reflected 'Picking up rubbish was definitely worth the night!'.
