Peer Support welcomes new Year 9s

On their first day at High School, Freyberg's 300 new Year 9 students were given timetables, tours, and a powhiri, before spending the afternoon with Year 13 students in 'Peer Support'.

Around 90 Year 13 students chose to give up a day of their holidays to train and lead their fellow students in Peer Support - a programme designed to smoothly transition students into high school. Teacher in charge, Heather Velvin was impressed with the number of senior students volunteering to help out. "Its so good to see our Year 13s respond so well to the leadership opportunity and work so positively with the Year 9 students" said Velvin.

Year 13 student leader Ryan Bailey thought the programme was great because it gave the Year 9's some confidence, and "helped them get to know each other and learn their names".
