Te Piringa National Kapa Haka Champions
A group made up of mostly Freyberg students
won the National Kapa Haka Secondary Schools competition in front of
10,000 people in Wellington
last week.
To get to nationals, Te Piringa earlier blitzed the field at the regional Manawatū Paetaiohi Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competition.
The national competition then saw 36 regional finalists from around the country compete in front of a sold-out TSB Arena. The scoring was in seven categories, worth 400 points each. Out of the maximum score of 2800, Te Piringa managed to score an almost perfect 2759.

Head of Maori at Freyberg, Tipene Waihi saw this as a huge achievement, "...especially considering we were competing against Maori immersion schools, and schools that have been entering for a long long time." Waihi was particularly excited to see a large number of year 9 and 10 students in the group, showing the future of Kapa Haka at Freyberg is looking strong.
"This is a great
achievement, one that brings honour to Freyberg
and honour to the Manawatu district." - Tipene Waihi
