Golden Stage Challenge Performance

Hair spray, Hair straighteners, chanting, dancing, brightly coloured t-shirts, and fiercely competitive students filled the Regent this Friday in the annual event known as Stage Challenge.Gold Rush in New Zealand

This year Freyberg's performance combined a poignant historic plot with an elaborate set, convincing costumes, and contrasting styles of dance. The eight minute show told the story of two Chinese immigrants during the 19th century Otago gold rush and the discrimination they faced. Over 120 Freyberg students were involved in retelling this story, which ended on a sombre note asking whether the 2002 New Zealand Government apology was really enough.

Although not winners in the seven school regional competition, Year 13 student, Brendan Murray was quick to point out that Freyberg won the "Set Crew" award - a great achievement considering the number and size of screens and props required to be moved on and off the stage. Freyberg also picked up excellence awards in Stage Use, Choreography, Performance Skill, Costuming, Sound Track, Drama, Original Concept and Set Design.

Year 9 Dancers Monique Bell and Hannah Day were pleased with the result saying "All the practice and hard work has really paid off, and has been really worth it."
