Top Science students sponsored by Rotary

Last week Rachel Benton and Max Annear-Henderson spoke to the Terrace End Rotary club about their experiences at the recent national Science and Technology Forum. Rachel and Max were invited, along with Craig Steed (HOD Science), to attend the Terrace End Rotary Club meeting held at Wharerata at Massey. The students spoke to the club about their experiences at the recent Science & Technology Forum, held for two weeks in Auckland.

Rachel and Max had been selected to represent the Manawatu region at the summer holiday event in Auckland and were kindly supported by Terrace End Rotary Club to attend. Rachel spoke of how the Forum was a great get together of intelligent and enthusiastic young people, and thanked the club for their backing.

Students at the forum benefited from hearing keynote speaker Professor Margaret Brimble; the only New Zealander ever to receive a L’Oréal-UNESCO Laureate. Attendees were split into three groups, going to the campuses of AUT, University of Auckland or Massey’s Albany, where they had classes and lab sessions.

Rachel and Max also had the opportunity to visit businesses that are based around science and technology. Max choose to visit the TVNZ studios and a company which produces ethanol for motor vehicles. Rachel choose the fingerprinting section of the police and Fisher and Paykel Healthcare. Both said the science forum was highly educational and gave them a chance to check out various different branches of science and gave them an insight into university life.
